26.03.04 - WORLD PREMIERE: MARIE'S MOUSTACHE

Marie's Moustache by Rebecka Marie Collins. It's your basic "boy meets girl who's dressed as a boy dressing as a girl" story, with a few plot twists thrown in.

On Monday 22 March, Cinema 6 at the Balmoral Cineplex was full and the standard of dress was high, with a sea of dinner suits, evening gowns and even a feather boa or two on display. Considering that this was a debut, budget film, Marie's Moustache was entertaining - especially for the family and friends of the cast.

The plot was great, giving plenty of opportunity for twists and turns, and the themes and issues raised, such as honesty in relationships, gave the audience plenty to think about. There were various bits here and there that would have been better omitted but this was Rebecka's first film so that could be expected.

The theme song, 'Marie's Moustache (Theme Song)', written by Geoff Rankin and performed by 6across, is lyrically clever and musically catchy. It sounded great as backing for the credits and was very much at home on the big screen. The song is now available to download free of charge from this location.

6across caught buses and hitched lifts (but not from strangers) to make it to the premiere. The band were dressed to the nines (though Renata, Weide & Gayle were possibly tens), complete with stick-on moustaches for guys and girls alike (though some moustaches are lighter coloured and harder to see in the photo than others).

A post-premiere reception was held at the nearby Cafe Venice, the name of which reminded some members of 6across of one of the several good one-liners in the movie (think Pisa/France). Members of the audience were able to mingle with the cast and crew while enjoying drinks and hot and cold finger foods.

The main message from Marie's Moustache is to be yourself - pretty good advice really. For a debut performance, all involved in the production need to be applauded, not only for 'giving it a go' but also for delivering a professional product. With the experience of making this film tucked firmly beneath their belt, we will surely continue to hear from Rebecka Collins and her crew in the coming years.

Verdict: A Newk, a Boonie & a Merv - three big moustaches out of five.
