The sound of two thirds of 6across was resounding in the heads of the Gympie Community Church on Saturday night as they drifted to sleep at the Christian Youth Campsite in Pialba (Hervey Bay). The campers had been treated to coffee, cakes and the most delicious treat of all - two hours of sonic beauty from 6across.
The length of the set allowed 6across to revisit a number of pieces from the Geoff Rankin back catalogue and to release two new songs to the world. In fact, many people could be heard, well into the night, humming the melody from "Wind Blows in the Windows", one of the songs premiered in Pialba.
Although there were a few bugs early on in the set, as makeshift microphone stands were assembled and the PA system was compiled, the crowd was won over by roaring renditions of light-hearted songs 'Fat Cat' and 'The Farmyard Animals' (a favourite of many fans).
A new feature of the 6across performance was the fan art competition. Unlike previous shows, which have featured an interpretative/liturgical dancing competition, Saturday night found most of the crowd busily sketching or composing poetry in an attempt to take home a copy of Geoff Rankin's CD, 'The Sacred Hill'. The rousing reception that this competition received will hopefully ensure it to be a regular feature of 6across shows. The entries for this competition can be found on the 6across website.
Following the Saturday night performance, 6across treated the campers again on Sunday morning with the tunes 'Waiting for the Lord' and 'Pieces That Didn't Fit'. Once again, these tunes brought beaming smiles and tapping feet to everyone in the room.
The performances in Pialba have definitely won 6across a number of new fans (and if you don't believe me, read the poems!) and the quality of these new fans and friends were worth the bizarre behaviour exhibited by the band members during the 7 hour round trip from Brisbane to Pialba.
